Sunset Community Foundation

The Sunset Community Foundation has recently approved a generous donation of $10,000 to the Goderich Lions Club in support of the Huron County Area Newcomer Fund.

This fund was formed to assist immigrants and refugees who have settled in Huron County within the first 18 months of their arrival, and who may be facing unforeseen and extraordinary expenses beyond the capacity of available supportive agencies or individuals to provide. Examples of such expenses may include large dental bills, targeted programming, and more.

The Sunset Community Foundation works to make our communities stronger, more vibrant and more just and equitable. They support local organizations that have innovative ideas to improve our region, provide thoughtful community leadership, and attract and manage permanent endowment funds. Their motto is “For good. Forever.”

The Goderich Lions efforts are collaborating with representatives from Huron County Immigration Partnership, Goderich Ministerial Association, and the Wingham Community Connectors, to support this effort.

The Huron Area Newcomer Fund committee was originally founded to assist Ukrainian newcomers, but it is available to support immigrants from various countries.

The committee can award up to $1,500 per family for an 18-month period, with a majority vote from the committee. In exceptional circumstances, additional grants may be awarded if sufficient need is demonstrated and funds are available.

This generous donation from the Sunset Community Foundation will undoubtedly go a long way in helping newcomers settle into their new lives in Huron County.

A cheque presentation is scheduled to take place in Exeter on May 17th, and the Goderich Lions Club and their collaborators are grateful for the support of the Sunset Community Foundation in making this fund possible.

The Huron Area Newcomer Fund is a shining example of community support and will provide much-needed assistance to those in need.
